The Maldives is a tropical paradise, but knowing when to visit can make all the difference to your trip. From sunny skies and calm seas to occasional tropical showers, this guide covers everything you need to plan the perfect getaway. Weather, seasons & travel tips.
Understanding the best times to visit the Maldives is one of the most important steps to take to make your trip truly serene. One of the common questions that were asked by many tourists were “what is the weather like in the Maldives?”. If your first guess was “hot, dry, and humid”, you’ve hit the jackpot! I guess one would expect hot temperatures year-round for the Maldives. This expectation is especially true when the country sits in the heart of the equator. However, lucky for us, we get a little more variety than just “hot and humid” every single day. The Maldives may be small, but it stretches over 800km from north to south, which means the weather can actually be quite different depending on which atoll you’re on. You could be soaking up the sun on one island while it’s raining on a neighbouring one, it’s one of those quirky little things that makes this place so special.

With an average temperature hovering around 30°C all year and plenty of sunshine, there really isn’t a bad time to visit. Sure, you might get the odd tropical shower here or there, but they’re usually short-lived, and most of the time you’ll be enjoying brilliant blue skies and calm, turquoise waters.
The Maldives has two main seasons: the dry season (northeast monsoon), also known as ‘Iruvai ‘(އިރުވައި), from late December / January to March / April, and the wet season (southwest monsoon), also known as ‘Hulhangu’ (ހުޅަނގު), from mid-May to November / early December. And when we say “wet,” we mean you’ll probably see more rainfall than usual, not that it’ll rain all day, every day. Some of the more unsettled weather tends to happen when one monsoon transitions into the other, bringing stronger winds and occasional showers, but don’t worry, plenty of sunshine still finds its way to you.
And if you ask previous visitors, no matter what month they came, the feedback is the same: a little rain never ruined their trip, and most days were filled with sunshine, warm waters, and serene island moments that make the Maldives truly unforgettable.
Back in the day, Maldivians didn’t rely on apps or Google to plan their days. They used the Nakaiy Calendar to know the best times to fish, travel, or cultivate crops, and even today, many fishermen and islanders still reference it.
